Summarize Text from Image is a Chrome extension that extracts text from images, screenshots, and scanned PDF pages. This policy explains what data the extension processes and when information leaves the browser.

Single purpose

The extension's single purpose is to extract, clean, copy, and optionally summarize text found in images and scanned documents selected by the user.

Local processing

Text recognition runs locally in the extension with bundled PP-OCRv6 Small detection, PP-OCRv5 Mobile Cyrillic recognition, and ONNX Runtime Web files. Images, screenshots, and PDF files are processed on the user's device and never leave the device. They are not uploaded for OCR.

PDF pages are rendered locally with bundled PDF.js files. A password entered for an encrypted PDF is used only in the current local processing session. It never leaves the device and is not stored.

The Clean feature performs conservative whitespace, line-wrap, paragraph, and hyphenation cleanup locally. It does not send the source document to a server.

Optional Summary processing

Summary is optional. Opening its tab sends nothing. Processing runs only after the user clicks Generate summary. The only network request containing document content sends the extracted text needed for that request over HTTPS to the operator's Cloudflare Worker. The source image, screenshot, PDF, and PDF password are never sent.

The Worker passes the extracted text to Cloudflare Workers AI, using the llama-3.2-3b-instruct model, to generate the requested summary. Requests use an opaque app token for service authentication. The token does not identify the user. The application code does not log source text, generated text, PDF passwords, or image contents. Worker logs contain operational metadata only and do not retain the text.

Browser storage

When the user selects an image on a webpage, Summarize Text from Image captures the full visible tab locally so it can crop the selected image accurately. The full screenshot is never uploaded. A one-time screenshot Blob is stored in local IndexedDB; storage.session holds only its small capture ID and other short-lived coordination state. The Blob is normally consumed and deleted by the side panel. Otherwise it expires after five minutes and is physically purged by the next scheduled or startup cleanup. If Chrome is closed at expiry, cleanup can occur when Chrome next starts. It is not used as document history.

The current release does not create user accounts, store an OCR or document history by default, use advertising identifiers, or include analytics inside the extension.

Permissions

Optional <all_urls> access is requested only after the user clicks Pick image or Capture page in the side panel. If granted, it lets those commands work after a direct panel open or tab change. The extension uses this access only for user-initiated local selection and capture. It does not continuously read webpages or upload page contents.
activeTab supports the toolbar-icon and keyboard-shortcut invocation paths.
scripting injects the temporary image-selection overlay after a user action.
sidePanel presents the OCR workflow beside the current page.
storage holds only a short-lived capture ID or page-action error in session storage. Selection bounds and the screenshot Blob are kept together in local IndexedDB until consumption or expiry.
offscreen runs local Canvas and WebAssembly OCR without blocking or modifying the webpage.
alarms schedules deletion of expired temporary screenshot records even when the extension service worker has stopped.

Summarize Text from Image does not use remotely hosted executable code. OCR models, WebAssembly files, PDF.js, and application scripts are packaged with the extension.

Chrome Web Store Limited Use

The use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy and its Limited Use requirements.

Information is used or transferred only to provide the user-requested extension feature. It is not used for advertising, is not sold, and is not used for credit decisions or unrelated profiling. Humans do not read user data unless the user gives specific consent, reading is necessary for security or abuse investigation, or reading is required to comply with applicable law.

Extracted text is transferred only after the user explicitly requests Summary and only to provide that feature. Summarize Text from Image does not sell personal data or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

Retention and deletion

The extension does not retain document content as history. Its Worker does not log or store request or response text. Cloudflare may process limited service metadata to provide and secure the service under its own policies.

Users can remove local extension data by uninstalling Summarize Text from Image or clearing the extension's site data in Chrome.

The extension operator is the controller for personal data processed through the optional Summary service.

The legal bases are:

Article 6(1)(b): processing extracted text to perform the Summary service the user requested.
Article 6(1)(f): the operator's legitimate interest in preventing abuse and applying rate limits. This processing uses operational metadata and the opaque app token, not the source document.

Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, users may request access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, and data portability. They may object to processing based on legitimate interests and may complain to a competent supervisory authority. To exercise these rights, email support@summarizeimage.com. The operator may need enough information to verify and handle the request, but the extension has no accounts and the token does not identify a user.

Cloudflare operates a global network, so processing may involve international transfers. The operator relies on Cloudflare's Data Processing Addendum and its standard contractual safeguards for applicable transfers.

California privacy rights

Under the CCPA and CPRA, the only category of personal information this service may process is user-provided extracted text, and it is processed transiently when the user requests Summary. The extension does not sell personal information and does not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.

California residents may request to know what personal information is processed, delete it, correct inaccurate information, and receive non-discriminatory treatment for exercising their rights. To exercise these rights, email support@summarizeimage.com. Because the service has no accounts, does not retain text, and uses a token that does not identify the user, there may be no retained personal information to locate or return.

Security

Summarize Text from Image limits network processing to the optional Summary action, uses HTTPS, authenticates requests with an opaque app token, validates request size and origin, and packages OCR dependencies locally. No method of processing is completely risk-free, but the extension is designed to minimize the data sent off-device.

Children

Summarize Text from Image is a general-purpose productivity tool and is not directed to children under 13. The operator does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes

Material changes to this policy will be shown by updating the Last updated date and, when required, through an in-product or store-listing notice. The effective date records when this policy first took effect.
